Ubuntu
An interesting operating system.
It is currently being run on two of my computers.
1. P3 motherboard, CPU is a Celeron 800Mhz
100FSB, Ram 320MB PC-100.
2. P4 motherboard, CPU is a Celeron D 2.66GHz 533FSB, Ram 1GB DDR-400.
I am running the latest release on both computers, 8.10 released October, 2008
Ubuntu has an interesting interface, with trashcan and desktop changes
being in the bottom right (one button for each desktop),
shutdown and clock in the top right, in the
lower left is a button to fold down all open windows, and upper left
has applications (programs, games, and whatnot) places (hard drive,
cd-rom, and suchlike) system (changes desktop, screensaver, and other
such administrator things) and beside that is firefox (internet) mail
and help.
Since firefox is designed to be compatable with
microsoft windows which is what most websites are designed for, it
opens and displays most websites just as well as internet explorer.
some linux based operating systems don't display websites completely,
there is usually some part of most sites that does not display
correctly, pictures, etc. since Ubuntu uses firefox instead of a linux
browser it does
not have this problem.
It comes with openoffice which contains
spreadsheets, wordproccesser, presention, and database, it is
able to read and make changes to microsoft works files and suppossedly
vice-versa, see openoffice page.
The Ubuntu people schedule a release every six
months, with tech support to last eighteen months for each standard PC
version, server version tech support lasts longer, after that you can
still find help on the Ubuntu forum.
Ubuntu appears to like to
have ram avalible, when I looked on their website I see they say if
your computer does not have 256MB of ram you need to download a special
version of Ubuntu, I am assuming they mean for best performance since I
first booted off the cd with 64MB of ram, and ran my first install with
128MB of ram.
The mail program in Ubuntu has an interesting
feature, when you are going through the setup process there is an
option to download (remove) from server, this would download your mail
and then erase it from the server, if you choose no it just downloads a
copy and leaves the mail on your server so you can get it later with
your good computer, in case Ubuntu is not on your main computer.
Its video and audio player appears to play almost
everything, as near as I can tell its performance is on a level with
VLC player, which most people regard as superior to Microsoft media
player, even version 11.
The 2rd computer I'm attempting to update with all
avalible software, so far disk usage has risen to 7.7GB from the
original release of 2+GB. there are quite a few updates avalible, and the
array of programs which you can download free of charge was impressive
to say the least.
EdUbuntu
An educational
version of Ubuntu which features a number of school type software.

Ubuntu (Linux distribution)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ubuntu (IPA pronunciation: /u'buntu/) is a widely used Linux
distribution predominantly targeted at personal computers. Based on Debian GNU/Linux,
Ubuntu concentrates on usability,
regular releases, ease of installation, and freedom from legal restrictions.
Ubuntu is sponsored by Canonical Ltd., a private company founded by South African entrepreneur Mark
Shuttleworth.
The name of the distribution comes from the Zulu and Xhosa
concept of ubuntu, which means “I am what I am
because of who we all are”. Ubuntu’s slogan – “Linux for Human Beings”,
encapsulates one of its main goals – making Linux more available and easy to
use.
